When you think about dogs you don’t normally picture an aggressive, scary animal. You think of a kind and loving best friend.
Although some dogs are friendlier than others, all dogs are capable of biting. Even the nicest dogs can bite, so how can you stop your dog from biting?
The annoying biting stage will pass, be patient. Hope this helps!
1. using a high pitched sound like their littermates would use to say “hey that actually hurts”
2. turning away/ending play time when biting becomes too much/they are not listening to cues
3. enforced naps are KEY. overtired or overstimulated puppies tend to act out because they don't understand the feeling of being tired. like when a toddler skips a nap
4. use toys or chews. when they get bitey, use a toy as a barrier between their teeth and your hand. also make sure they have proper chews to help with teething. frozen carrots worked wonders!
Also, Make sure they’re getting some sufficient exercise and mental stimulation so you know they’re not lacking! the fact that Pups that ARE bored, and that are NOT receiving sufficient stimulation, time with their owners and mental and physical exercise do tend to have more behavioral issues (being destructive, biting, having separation anxiety etc.) If you have no idea what these exercises are, these are a good place to start: https://braintrianing4dogs.com/MentalExercises.
There is no magic fix.
Truly, the best way to teach them not to bite is to STOP ALL INTERACTION the very instant it happens. No yelping, no eye contact, no “no”, nothing. This shows them very quickly that biting will not get them rewarded with attention.
When the puppy inevitably gives up (it can be hard to ignore their attempts, but it's very effective, try not to squirm), THEN reward.
Often they will go back to biting because it's natural to them. Consistency is key. Stop interacting entirely at EVERY bite and wait them out so you have an opportunity to reward the stopping biting.
Struggling with puppy training? This is a good training resource: https://braintrianing4dogs.com/ObedienceTraining. It helps you teach your pup to stop bite inhibition and end all your bad pup’s behaviors! Plus, the ‘Puppy Training’ modules are gold for building routines.
A final thought: Puppys do things that are cute when they are little, but as they grow those things become an inconvenience. Puppy barks are sweet. A puppy jumping up and leaning on your knee is sweet. Then the puppy grows up and now you have a dog that barks and jumps up on strangers. Break the habbit when they're little. No barking allowed and no jumping up.
I'm going to show you a dog training system – a PROVEN “Battlefield-Tested” system for creating an incredibly well-behaved, intelligent dog who follows your every command! (Even if you're dealing with a really stubborn or difficult dog)
